Chili Lime Chicken Tacos with Tropical Slaw & Avocado Crema

Get in vacation mode with our first recipe of the month - Chili Lime Chicken Tacos with Avocado Crema & Tropical Slaw!!

These tacos are super easy and FULL of flavour! They cover all the bases - spicy, sweet, tangy, crunchy, AND creamy - best of all worlds!

What we really love about this recipe is that each element is so versatile on its own. The chicken can be used on a salad or pulled & thrown in a sandwich. The slaw can be used as a side or salad topper. And the crema is a great dip or a flavour boost on a standard burger! The possibilities are endless with each item.

Chili Lime Chicken

  • 1 pound chicken breasts pounded to ½ inch thickness

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 2 teaspoon chili powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

  • 2 cloves garlic - minced

  • 3/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

  • 1 teaspoon honey

  • Juice from 1 limes

  • Lime zest from 1 lime

How-To

  1. Prep marinade. In a shallow bowl, whisk chicken rub ingredients together. Place chicken in bowl with marinade and rub evenly all over. Timer permitting, allow chicken to sit for 30 minutes at room temperature.

  2. Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium high heat. Once very hot, add chicken and cook, undisturbed for 3-5 minutes, or until nicely browned (or blackened if you prefer) on one side. Turn chicken over, cover, and reduce heat to medium. Cook for approximately 5-7 more minutes (depending on thickness of chicken), or until chicken is cooked through. Remove to a cutting board and let rest 5 minutes before slicing.

  3. Garnish with extra fresh lime juice if desired.

Tropical Slaw

  • 1/2 purple cabbage

  • 1 medium carrot

  • 1/2 cup chopped green onion

  • Juice from 2 large lime

  • 2 Tbsp honey

  • 2 Tbsp minced cilantro

  • 1/2 to 2 fresh jalapeño peppers (depending on desired spice level) - diced

  • 1 large mango (slightly ripe, but still firm)

  • 1/4 cup olive oil

  • Salt to taste

How-To

  1. Thinly slice cabbage, carrot, and green onion - add to large bowl.

  2. Skin mango, and cut into small cubes - add the same large bowl.

  3. Add minced cilantro and diced jalapeños to same bowl.

  4. In a measuring cup, add lime juice, olive oil, and honey. Whisk together.

  5. Pour dressing over components in large bowl, mix all together until well combined. Salt to taste.

*TIP: begin making slaw once Chicken starts marinading, as all the flavours have a chance to sit together prior to plating.

Avocado Crema

  • 1 large ripe avocado

  • 1 cup sour cream

  • 1 clove garlic - minced

  • 1/2 cup cilantro, roughly chopped

  • Juice from 1 lime

  • 1/2 tsp salt or to taste

How-To

  1. In a medium bowl, add avocado, sour cream, garlic, lime juice, and cilantro. Mix until well combined.

  2. Salt to taste.

*TIP: You can use a food processor for this sauce if you want it extra smooth!
